As a homeowner, it’s important to stay on top of all of the different systems at work in your home so you can address any concerns as they pop up. However, you may not know what to expect from a malfunctioning system. For your electrical system, one of the more common issues that arises is faulty electrical wiring. Here are a few of the top indicators that your wiring is faulty or damaged.
- Flickering lights. It’s normal for lights to flicker as the bulbs are on their way out, but if you have a flickering lights issue and the bulbs aren’t the problem, your wiring is likely to blame. Sometimes, this issue can be resolved by having an electrician adjust your electrical wiring and reroute certain wires to different circuits.
- Warm outlets. Because the majority of your home’s electrical system is hidden behind your walls, you can’t always use your vision as a diagnostic tool for something being wrong. Your electrical wiring is mostly out of sight, but one indicator doesn’t require you to see the wires: warm outlets. If your outlets feel warm when you touch them, the wiring behind them may be damaged. Be careful to only touch the outlets when checking for this issue, not the wires themselves.
- Burning smells. Another indicator of a wiring issue is a burning smell, particularly by your outlets and electrical panel. This is a very serious warning sign of an issue present and should be addressed as soon as possible. If your home has a burning smell, there’s a high risk of an electrical fire.
