The electrical wiring is not easy to access in many cases, as it runs through the walls vertically and horizontally, so it can be more difficult to spot issues with the wiring compared to fixed components of your system, such as the electrical panel and outlets. However, knowing how to recognize common signs of electrical wiring problems can help you to address them in enough time before they become more difficult or expensive to resolve.
Here are a few signs that something is wrong with your electrical wiring:
- Flickering, Dimming, or Buzzing Lights – If your lights are flickering or dimming or you can hear a buzzing noise coming from them, this is likely an electrical wiring issue. There could be a loose connection or damage somewhere.
- Chewed Wiring – If you somehow find yourself in a position to visually inspect your wiring and you notice that the wires look frayed or chewed, a rodent may have paid you a visit. You’ll need to call an electrician to check out the damage and make repairs.
- Discolored or Scorched Outlets – If you notice an outlet is discolored or has scorch marks—or if it looks normal but is hot to the touch—these may indicate that you have an electrical wiring issue that needs to be addressed.
- Strange Odors – Burning smells or other strange odors emanating from your outlets are not good signs. It’s likely your electrical wiring is damaged, so cease using that outlet and call an electrician to come check it out sooner rather than later.
